Fashion Is Having A Wes Anderson Moment

By: Brittany Adams , For Style.com

When Magdalena Frackowiak stepped onto Prada’s menswear runway earlier this week in a sporty headband, vintage-looking fur, and color-blocked trousers, we immediately visualized Margot and Richie from The Royal Tenenbaums. Even if, as Tim Blanks pointed out in his review, that reference “seemed a tad literal” for Miuccia, it got us thinking about other recent looks that fit director Wes Anderson’s distinctive country club-meets-seventies-rec room aesthetic. At Carven, Guillaume Henry whipped up preppy madras for the boys and tailored seersucker separates for the girls, while No. 21’s Alessandro Dell’Acqua mixed and matched stripes and florals with off-kilter panache. Stella McCartney stirred up her own mise-en-scène, putting on a carnival-themed Resort presentation with models lounging on hammocks in slouchy suits (pictured) that would make Anderson’s costume designer jealous.

Louis vuitton fall 2012 gorgeous ready-to-wear collection

From Style.com | PARIS, March 7, 2012 | By Nicole Phelps

How do you follow up a merry-go-round? If you're Marc Jacobs at Louis Vuitton, you get your people to build an old-fashioned train car. From scratch. The steam engine it was attached to pulled into the Cour Carrée a few minutes after ten this morning. One by one, Jacobs' models de-boarded wearing outfits straight out of the golden age of railroading, followed by porters carrying as many as three bags per girl. The news on the bag front this season is their oversize proportions and exotic fabrications. "It's just a trip," Jacobs said afterward, but you could tell even he was chuffed by the grand spectacle of it all.

 Fall 2012 Ready-to-Wear

Longtimers in the crowd remembered a John Galliano couture show for Dior, the one where a train stuffed with supermodels steamed its way into Paris' Gare d'Austerlitz. The more interesting echo today was with Miuccia Prada's show in Milan, where she too put skirts, dresses, and coat-dresses—likewise embellished with enormous crystals—over cropped pants and platform pumps. Here, as there, the elongated silhouette created by all that layering was quite strong—Stephen Jones' squashed hats added a good six inches of height.

 Fall 2012 Ready-to-Wear

Even if the look didn't strike you as a modern proposal, there was plenty to marvel at, from the kangaroo leather swatches patchworked together into a checkerboard of matte and shine to the kaleidoscopic application of holographic baubles on brocade. Only a house with the high-techiest technologies at its disposal could pull off that kind of embroidery.

 Fall 2012 Ready-to-Wear

During a post-show interview conducted on board the train, Jacobs said he was interested in "things looking like they were from another time." The exhibition Louis Vuitton—Marc Jacobs, opening at Les Arts Décoratifs tonight, which tells the tale of the two men's contributions to the megabrand, clearly had Jacobs thinking about the company's nineteenth-century origins and travel heritage—and how to make the synergistic most of them.

SURREAL PLANES

ANOTHER WONDERFULL EDITORIAL SHOWCASING MARY KATRANTZOU, BY E.M.H.

FROM A MAGAZINE: Photographs by Erik Madigan Heck, showcasing the vivid printed designs of Greek designer Mary Katrantzou‘s Fall Winter 2011 collection. Styling by Heidi Bivens, model is Janice Alida and set design by Shaun Kato Samuel for A Magazine.

In conjunction with Nomenus Quarterly, A MAGAZINE is proud to present this exclusive series of images by NY-based photographer Erik Madigan Heck, showcasing the vivid printed designs of Greek designer Mary Katrantzou‘s Fall Winter 2011 collection.

nspired by the late interior paintings of the 19th century French painters Pierre Bonnardand Edouard Vuillard, Heck has pushed his dream-like aesthetic into new territory, blurring the lines between fashion photography and fine art. Combining Katrantzou’s dazzling architectural demi-couture with (equally decadent) customised sets, Erik achieves a piercing chromatic effect.

Reflecting upon the images, Heck stated “It signifies a different direction in my own work, where I am trying to flatten the space between photography and illustration, by eliminating photographic elements and painting on different surfaces and colors in post-production, attempting to move closer towards painting itself, in process and form.”
